5 Tips for Growing Succulents Indoors

For the population that lives somewhere where it snows, gardening all year outside isn’t a possibility. Thankfully, we can garden inside with fun houseplants all year long. Unfortunately, growing succulents indoors can be one of the most frustrating houseplants. However, in my opinion, the most fun as well. Here are a couple of things to consider when growing succulents indoors to help you get bright, beautiful plants.

1. More Light

If you have a house with large south facing windows that get glorious sunshine, just place your succulents there, they will be perfectly happy. However, if you live in a house/apartment with really poor sunlight, consider investing in a grow light (link to my favorite one here). Grow lights will keep your succulents growing fast and beautiful all year long. You won’t have to worry about stretching and discoloring as many indoor succulents tend to do. Or buy succulents that can handle less light, such as string of pearls, haworthias, or kalanchoes. Read more on grow lights here.

2. Maintainance

Bugs are a no no. So unless you want bugs in your house and all up in your plants business, remove dead leaves when they dry up on your succulent and provide good air circulation around the plant. This can be done just by having it by the door, or in a room with a fan. You want the soil to be able to dry faster so bugs aren’t attracted. Here is a link to bugs on your succulents.

3. Water Less

If you read our succulent care post, you know that you want to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Indoors, you can prevent rot one step further by decreasing your watering. Instead of soaking the soil, give it less water. You can still water as often, just do less. This will let your soil dry out even faster which prevents rot and prevents those weird little flies from moving in to your wet soil. For the best controlled watering, use this garden syringe. It is my all time favorite and will change your life. Also great for watering propagating babies.

4. Keep Out of Reach from Kids and Pets

I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t eat succulents so keep your collection either up high or somewhere little ones won’t bother them. You also don’t want soil to run amuck your clean house. So make sure your succulents are on display but somewhere little hands and paws won’t get to.

5. Arrange

The best part of having house plants is being able to show them off around your place. Arrange your succulents into fun containers with other succulents. My pro tip is to grow your succulents under your grow light in arranged containers. Then bring them out to around your house for a few days and then put them back under the lights. You can time this right for parties at your house and they will provide great decor.
